Colombia

Foreigners who do not require a visa can stay up to 90 days and extend their stay for a total of 180 days in a calendar year.

Digital Nomad Visa

Allows nomads to work for a foreign company or independently from Colombia for up to 2 years1. Foreigners can also start a digital company if deemed in the interest of Colombia.

Requirements include:

  • Evidence of renumeration and that work is done remotely
  • Entrepreneurs must explain their project and prove they have sufficient funds to finance it
  • Bank statements meeting at least the legal monthly minimum wage for the last 3 months prior to application
  • Health insurance for the entirety of the visa
Temporary Residence

There are 14 types of temporary residence including:
  • Partner or Owner - for those who have at least 100 times the current legal monthly minimum wage in an incorporated company or in capital stock. Up to 3 years2
    • Requirements include:
      • Company address, tax identification number, principal business activity, and number of employees
      • Bank statements proving the investment amount at the date of application
      • Proof of the business's economic activity and solvency with the 3 most recent bank statements, lease, and tax/ social security contributions
  • Pensioner - for retired foreigners who receive a monthly payment from a government or private company. Foreigners cannot work in Colombia on the visa and it is valid for 3 years3.
    • Requirements include:
      • Proof a lifetime monthly income, preferably no less than 3 times the minimum monthly legal salary
      • Certificate from a Colombian authority confirming the applicants psychophysical health
      • Evidence of health insurance valid in Colombia
  • Investor - for those who have a real estate investment of at least 350 times the minimum monthly legal salary or Foreign Direct Investment of at least 650 times the minimum monthly legal salary. Up to 3 years4
    • Requirements include:
      • For Foreign Direct Investment, evidence of the investment from the Sistema de Información Cambiaria del Banco de la República
      • For real estate, the applicant must provide the property's certificate of Certificado de Tradición y Libertad, proof the property is only in their name, and evidence of the investment from the Sistema de Información Cambiaria del Banco de la República
      • Evidence of funds to live in Colombia
      • Colombian health insurance
*Partner and pensioner visas allow the applicant to request a visa for the following beneficiaries: spouse/partner, child up to 25 years old, or a child with physical or mental disabilities

*Investor visa requires the resident to immediately report any changes in circumstance related the foreigners real estate or Foreign Direct Investment

Permanent Residence

Temporary residents of Colombia can gain permanent residence after residing in Colombia for a specified amount of time. For example, temporary residents on a pensioner's visa can obtain permanent residence after living in Colombia for 5 years5.

Permanent residence can extend to the following beneficiaries of an applicant: spouse/ partner, children up to 25 years old or a child with a physical or mental disability.

Requirements may include an explanation of an applicants source of income their compliance with tax obligations.

Citizenship

Residents of Colombia can obtain citizenship after 2 years from the day of residence if they are married to a Colombian national or have Colombian children and 5 years otherwise6.

*Absence from Colombia for 1 year or more will reset the time counted towards citizenship
