Visitors can stay in Panama for up to 90 days if they have a passport valid for at least 3 months and pay 50 balboas ($50)*1

The tourist visa can be extended for up to 90 more days with a passport valid for at least 3 months2

Remote Workers

Foreigners who work remotely for a company or have their own digital business are eligible to live in Panama for 9 months3. The visa can be extended for another 9 months.

Requirements include:

  • Annual income of at least 36,000 balboas 
  • If employed; proof of monthly income (at least 3,000 balboas), company's registration in the country of origin, approval for remote work, and title
  • If the applicant owns their own business they must provide registration records, a notarized description of the business services, and bank records showing the origin of their income
  • Health and criminal records
  • Proof of health insurance
Temporary Residence

Spouses, children under 18 years old, and parents of a temporary resident are eligible for temporary residence4. Temporary residence is valid for one year and extendable for up to six years. Children 18-25 may also be eligible if they're students.

Requirements include:
  • Proof of lineage to the temporary resident (marriage, birth certificate)
  • Proof of financial means such as tax or bank statements averaging at least 850 balboas per month
  • Health and criminal records
Permanent Residence

Real estate investments of at least 300,000 balboas give the buyer an option for permanent residence5. Permanent residence is available to dependents for an additional 2,000 balboa investment each.

Foreigners can also invest at least 300,000 balboas in a combination of real estate and fixed term bank deposits for permanent residence6. The the fixed term deposit must be for at least three years in a Panamanian bank.  

Requirements include:
  • Copy of fixed term certificate from the bank
  • Proof of real estate investment from the public registry
  • Proof funds originate outside Panama
  • Health and criminal records
Foreigners whose deposits in the National Bank of Panama or Savings Bank earn at least 850 balboas in interest per month are eligible for permanent residence7. The deposits must have a fixed term of at least five years. 

Requirements include:
  • Proof of monthly interest and deposit term from the bank
  • Health and criminal records
Pensioners who earn at least 1,000 balboas per month are eligible for permanent residence8. Each additional dependent must prove funds of at least 250 balboas per month. 

Spouses may combine their pensions to meet the 1,000 balboa minimum. 

If the applicant owns Panamanian property valued at least 100,000 balboas their pension requirement is 750 balboas per month.

Requirements include:
  • Proof of lifetime pension equalling at least 1,000 balboas per month from relevant government, business, or organization
  • If the pension is from a private company, the applicant must submit confirmation from the company that they manage the fund and provide a bank statement. 
  • Property ownership records from the public registry if relevant
  • Health and criminal records
Spouses of a Panamanian are eligible for permanent residence. Applicants must prove they live with their spouse9.

Requirements include:
  • Marriage certificate
  • Panamanian spouses' birth certificate
  • Identity card of the Panamanian spouse
  • Proof of marital domicile such as a lease or title
  • Health and criminal records
Those with Panamanian kids at least five years old qualify for Panamanian permanent residence10.

Requirements include:
  • Birth certificate of the Panamanian children from the National Civil Registry
  • Notarized affidavit confirming the parent has been responsible 
  • Proof of applicants address such as a lease or title
