Many foreigners do not need a visa to stay in Mexico for up to 180 days.1

Temporary Residence

Foreigners can apply in Mexico for temporary residence lasting up to 4 years.2


Temporary residence can be renewed3 or changed to permanent residence.4

Applicants must be able to prove economic solvency in one of two ways:

"a) ...investments accounts or personal bank accounts with a monthly balance of at least $1,037,200.00 MXN during the previous 12 months of statements...5

"b) applicant has a job or pension that yields a monthly income of $62,232.00 MXN after taxes during the previous 6 months..."

Permanent Residence

Retirees or those 62+ can become permanent residents of Mexico if they meet the following criteria:

"a) ...proof of personal investments accounts or personal bank accounts with a monthly balance of at least $4,148,800.00 MXN during the previous 12 months of statements..."6

"b) ..documents showing that the applicant has a job or pension that yields a monthly income of $103,720.00 MXN after taxes during the previous 6 months..."

Mexican Citizenship

Naturalization by Citizenship

Permanent or temporary residents who have lived in Mexico for at least 5 years are eligible to apply for citizenship.

Applicants must pass Spanish language and Mexican history tests.7 They must also attest to the number of exits from Mexico in the 2 years prior to their application and the duration of each exit.
