Uruguay

Lots of foreigners can visit Uruguay for 90 days without a visa.1

The 90 day tourist visa can be extended for 90 more days.2

Digital Nomad Visa

Permission to live in Uruguay for 180 days. Renewable once for another 180 days.3

Application requirements include: 

  • Signed affidavit proving no criminal convictions in the past 5 years4
  • Sufficient funds to live in Uruguay
Visa renewal requires proof of compliance with the Uruguayan vaccination schedule. 

Temporary Residence


Temporary residents can live in Uruguay for up to 2 years.

Workers or entrepreneurs, students, and members of a religious order are eligible to obtain temporary residence.5

Application requirements include:
  • Criminal records for the past 5 years and from country of birth6
  • Proof of compliance with the Uruguayan vaccination schedule
  • Authorized health card from the Uruguayan Ministry of Health
Workers or entrepreneurs must provide notarized evidence of their monthly renumeration and length of employment on company letterhead. Monthly earnings must be at least the minimum wage.

Temporary residence can be extended within 90 days of expiration.

Permanent Residence

Requirements for all applicants:
  • Criminal records for the past 5 years and from country of birth
  • Proof of compliance with the Uruguayan vaccination schedule
Requirements for applicants without Uruguayan family (spouse, cohabitant, parents, siblings)5 include:
  • Authorized health card from the Uruguayan Ministry of Health7
  • Proof of livelihood - common categories include: 
    • Employee of an organization
      • Notarized certificate of income equaling at least the minimum wage or
      • Social security payment history 
    • Employee of a foreign organization
      • Notarized certificate proving the relation between the employee and employer, employer country of origin, employer business activities. Employee's monthly income and how work is undertaken.The foreign company must not have a subsidiary in Uruguay. Registration status with the Uruguayan labor and social security agencies. 
    • Employee of a person (ie. domestic worker)
      • Notarized certificate of employment relationship showing income equaling at least the minimum wage or
      • Social security payment history 
    • Self-employed
      • Notarized certificate of monthly income equaling at least minimum wage. Certificate must include the business activities, inception date, physical address
      • Accounting certificate 
    • Business owner or shareholder
      • Notarized proof of monthly income, legal status, business activities, physical address, tax domicile
    • Landlord
      • Notarized certificate proving monthly income, number of properties, how payment is received 
    • Retiree or pensioner
      • Original and copy of most recent payment receipt from a pension 
Requirements for applicants with Uruguayan family:
  • Family member's passport or other government ID8
  • Foreign or national certificate proving familial link issued less than 1 year before application

Citizenship

Who has the right to citizenship?
  • Those with family in Uruguay and have lived there habitually for at least 3 years (habitual is defined as having not left Uruguay for 6 consecutive months). Applicants must have some profession, property, or capital in Uruguay.9
  • Those without family in Uruguay who have lived there habitually for at least 5 years and have some profession, property, or capital in Uruguay.
  • Those who have received "special grace" from the General Assembly.
- All applicants must be able to speak Spanish
- If a departure from Uruguay exceeds 6 months the residence duration will return to 0

Requirements include:
  • Proof of Nationality
    • Birth certificate, marriage certificate if applicable 
  • Migration Record
    • Certificate of Residence and Certificate of Migratory Movements issued by the National Directorate of Migration
  • Livelihood
    • "Labor History" and Personal Activities" certificate from the Social Security Bank
    • Retirement or pension certificate from the Social Security Bank if applicable
    • Title and deed of a home if it provides income 
  • Marriage/Civil Union
    • Proof spouse lives with the applicant
  • Medical History
  • Testimony
    • Witnesses must be older than 25 and have known the applicant for at least 5 years (or 3 years in the case of an applicant with Uruguayan family)
    • Witnesses cannot be family members, employees or employers, police officers, or elected officials10
- All documentation from private institutions must be verified by the Public Notary
